ENGLISH
Good evening. My name is Hidetoshi Takeda, from the Japanese Children’s Society.
Tonight, I would like to take you to the place where your employees’ children spend their day.

ENGLISH
JCS is a Japanese school in New York, founded in 1979.
We help children grow along three axes — Japan, and U.S. and be themselves — on one stage: New York.
And beneath it all is one foundation: wellbeing of mind and body. For us, mental health is not a program. It is the ground we build on.

ENGLISH
When we talk about mental health at work, we often forget the family that got on the plane with them.
The child — making new friends in a language that is not yet their own.
The parent — performing at work while raising a family far from home.
And the teacher — holding every child’s journey, while carrying their own.
Each of them affects the others.

So this year, we took an honest look at ourselves. We completed One Mind’s Mental Health at Work Index.
Our overall score is 2.1. The benchmark is 2.5.
We chose to show you this number — because this is where we start.
Now look at Work Design and Environment: 4.3, well above the benchmark. The culture of care is already in our classrooms.
What we have not yet done is put it into words, into a strategy, and into numbers. Measuring and Reporting is 0.6.
So 2.1 is not a measure of how much we care. It is the first time we have tried to measure that care at all.

Mental Health at Work Index

ENGLISH
Where do we begin? With our teachers.
Teachers serve children and families every day. Caring for them is how we care for our children.
So our first step is a mental health program for all of our educators.
Next, our students. At JCS, we do not give children tasks they can easily ace. We keep them in challenging environments — and New York, where the world’s best gather, lets us set that bar high.
Learning to fail and recover is part of their education. But high challenge requires real care.
And then, we hope, parents — as an invitation, not a mandate.

ENGLISH
Your employees’ mental health does not begin at nine and end at five. It lives in their children’s classrooms. It lives in the questions their partner asks at dinner.
Through our work with One Mind, we want to raise the mental health of our whole community — teachers, children, and parents together.
These children are your employees’ children today — and the global talent who may support your companies tomorrow.
And now, we are asking ourselves a new question: could what we are building be opened to the wider Japanese community in New York?
If your company sends families here, this question is yours, too. We would like to answer it with you.
Thank you.

One Mind
